Maybe if the distribution of money lent itself better towards playing like an outlaw, it would make more sense. Not to mention, many main story missions reward the player with lots of money anyway. Before you know it, you've got a massive bounty on your head in every corner of the map, meanwhile in the story, Arthur Morgan's character arc nudges the other way. Thing is, you have no incentive to play with low honor. The game and story are greatly favorable to playing with high honor. My main issue with the game is the morality system. That I felt this deeply about every member of the gang (sans Micah) speaks to how well executed this game is. It amazes me that I was THIS invested in a gang of outlaws. I even tried finding different items that gang members requested you find. I was genuinely doing my best for the gang, contributing money for camp upkeep. It makes it all the more tragic what happens to the gang and many of its members. All of that helps to immerse you into the world. Many of these features wouldn't be out of place in a classic Elder Scrolls game. You have to eat, shave, bath, sleep, and also maintain your horse's well being. Nearly all of the side missions are consistent in quality to the main missions too! It always feels fresh.Īnother aspect of the game I appreciate are the different management systems. Sometimes, those same NPC's you help will recognize you in a differing town, and you'll be rewarded for it. I loved traversing to the objective, only to help a man get his leg out of a bear trap, or intervene in a robbery. I only ever used the fast travel system once.

But during all this, you have time to take the world in. Scores going sideways, the main camp relocates several times. I love that, as the story progresses, you slowly see how things get more desperate for the gang. Parts of the world are still stuck in the old west, but many pockets of it are civilized and more modern.

The world is my favorite part of this game. Bank/train robberies, bounty hunting, being a hired gun to protect a stagecoach, taking on the rival gang, it all serves that purpose.

Nearly everything you do in this game is in service of that. Civilization is creeping, but you and your gang do what you can to survive. You're a band of runaway outlaws, but the world has so few places for you.
